The Opportunity
The Victorian hop warehouse on Newcomen Street sits on the former site of the Marshalsea Prison, a building with centuries of Southwark history behind it. With its central location, it was the perfect setting for a new coworking space. The renovation kept the classic brick exterior and combined it with a modern industrial interior.
With members, guests and deliveries moving through the building constantly, a lift was needed not only to meet legal accessibility obligations but to create a space that was genuinely inclusive for everyone. The challenge was finding something that could be retrofitted into a Victorian structure, handle heavy daily use, and sit naturally within a carefully designed space.
The Solution
The Aritco PublicLift Access was chosen in part because its pit-free design made installation quick and simple with minimal disturbances to the historic building. Furthermore, in a commercial space where multiple businesses and their clients depend on the lift every day, reliability and safety were also important factors. They chose a black finish to fit the industrial interior and even incorporated details in the lift like yellow floor lighting to echo the yellow lighting on the stairwell, creating cohesion between the two.
The Result
The Aritco PublicLift Access is now part of daily life at Axe & Bottle Court. Members carry packages between floors with ease. Visitors with mobility challenges move through the building independently. At peak times it takes pressure off the stairwell and keeps traffic flowing across all three floors. All this, while maintaining the look and feel the designers intentionally created for this modern-day workspace.
